I am open with my team and boss about my adhd and what I need to succeed - as much consistency as we can manage, flexibility in my work schedule so I can work during my most productive periods (i'm a morning person so I like to work as early as possible), reducing "context switching" as much as possible by ensuring we plan ahead so that we reduce the amount of scrambling to get stuff done. When I am overwhelmed it's even harder to stay on task because I freeze not knowing what to work on next and end up on reddit (lol). I've added a website blocker to my chrome browser where I will limit what sites I can access if it's an especially busy period so that when I mindlessly go to scroll or browse something it reminds me that I need to focus. Every deadline or task gets marked on my calendar so I don't lose sight of it - I will also include as many attachments, emails or references to the "appointment" itself so that I don't have to go back and look through my emails as I find that triggers me to lose focus if I come across something that isn't related. I set alarms on my phone to remind me to approve something or get a really important deliverable out in case I get distracted with something else and lose track of time. Depending on the task I need to be "overstimulated to focus" - it was a tip I learned years ago - I listen to instrumental motivational movie soundtracks with noise cancelling headphones and I find it helps a lot to keep on task. I also don't do well with being able to hold attention or focus while talking on the phone and not physically seeing someone, so I try my best to connect through email or in person. When I can't avoid a phone call, it somehow helps me to doodle mindlessly (I draw a lot of arrows) so that my hands are busy but my mind feels clear to listen. These are things that help me that I've learned for myself through the years. I'm medicated too so that definitely helps but the meds are not a perfect solution for me at all. Edit to add that at the end of the day, even people without ADHD have some level of chaos to manage, we just need to work a little differently. It will never be perfect, but nobody focuses or is productive 100% of the time.
