Thought hiring globally would save money. Boy was I wrong. Just did the math on our last 3 international hires: - UK developer: $2400 ($1500 laptop + $900 in shipping, duties, VAT) - Brazil designer: $2100 ($1200 laptop + $800 customs nightmare + 3 weeks delay) - Germany engineer: $2600 ($1600 laptop + $1000 in "compliance fees" I still don't understand) That's $7100 for 3 laptops. Our entire US team's equipment cost $8500 total. But wait, there's more! Each international hire takes 2-3 weeks to get their equipment vs 2 days for domestic. So we're paying salaries for people who literally can't work yet. The "global talent cost savings" are completely eaten up by logistics costs nobody talks about. Starting to think the whole "hire anywhere" thing is just marketing BS.
