Hi, I have two years public tax experience and now have been in a sales tax role at a private company for two years as well. Making \~95k in VHCOL plus it's mostly a remote role with one day a week required in office. The pay is great for the work I do and I know I am lucky. My main concern is that I feel like I'm being pigeon holed into sales tax and don't see a lot of upward potential in this side of tax. I also feel like my overall accounting knowledge is dwindling as I sit in this role doing the same procedures not really expanding my skillset. I believe the highest position I could reach in sales tax is Manager. I don't want Manager to be my ceiling when I have hit 10-15 years working in this field. I know I can reach higher levels when applying myself. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions about my situation? I have been thinking of swapping from this role to public audit or internal audit at private company to expand my accounting knowledge and experience. I'm not much a fan of doing the 70-80 hour busy seasons but would also be willing to do another 2 years at a job where I put my head down and grind to get experience to get senior again. I believe I would have to restart as an associate since I have no audit experience and only tax experience. Would love to hear some outside perspectives as I don't know anyone in accounting and have been thinking about my long-term career in accounting.
