Location: California. My last day of employment is Tuesday, but I lost my work keys and cannot return them. Management mentioned it’s gonna be thousands of dollars for them to re-key the building and it sounds like they were intending to hold me liable. Is this legal? I will need to double check any agreements that I signed regarding keys but it would really be shitty to owe that much when it was a simple mistake. The key ring that the keys were on broke and somehow they fell off my lanyard and I only noticed when I heard the key ring hit the ground. Searched EVERYWHERE and never found them. This was months ago and there’s nothing on the keys themselves that would indicate them being for my company.
