I've been an entrepreneur for 10 years. 2 successful companies. I've had hundreds of personnel, but mostly working remote. I've recently spun up more staff on-site. 4 of us share an office. We are pretty balls to the wall right now with growth and are in our computers pretty much 35 hours out of our 45ish hour weeks. I'm a pretty focused person and I'll rarely talk about anything non-work related. I let my, much more social, COO do that. I don't know if it's my lack of experience with in-person staff or a sign of the times, but I've noticed my staff often don't give me their full attention when I speak. Now, this is me sort of randomly talking through the day, always business, but not structured discussion times. For example, I'll be doing some research and find something that applies to a client and I'll say "found something interesting guys. [Insert description]". I do this maybe every hour or so. They seem audibly attentive, but they continue to type on their keyboards or phones (work related, not playing). Now, I don't care a ton about eye contact. But the continuing to type does irk me a bit. That said, I can live with it if I know they are fully listening. But I find about 50% of the time they may have heard me, but didn't really listen and I end up reminding them we discussed it. I've brought up a couple times, passively, that one of my pet peeves is people being inattentive. One of my staff even asked "like what" and I explained what they do to which they were like "oh ya, that's really annoying" in agreement. Yet they still do it. I think it's partially because we're so busy and partially part of this plugged in time we're in 2025. I assume I either need to start prefacing with "guys please give me your attention" or perhaps saving my thoughts for a one-time consolidated data dump throughout the day, or an aggregated email. But again, were balls to the wall right now so I'm just trying to get it out there or I'll forget. Regardless, curious if this is something y'all are experiencing and how you handle it.
