Location: Illinois So I have a tough situation, essentially to keep it brief, I've been sharing an apartment with a roommate for the last 7 months. Both of us are on the lease and we split rent. However, last week, a cop showed up at our door and arrested my roommate for an old warrant that neither of us were aware of. He's aware of the circumstances of the charges but didn't know they were being pursued, and I didn't know about any of it at all. He's being extradited out of state to face charges and from the look of it, I have doubts that he'll be back for the foreseeable future. It's just an immensely stressful situation and I'm still struggling to figure out what to do or how to process it all. Right now though, my main concern is figuring out how to tell my property manager/landlord about this situation, and also what I NEED to tell them and what details I'm allowed to omit. I have no place to go if I get evicted so right now, my priority is trying to tackle this situation and be able to continue living here in his absence. I've managed to secure emergency funds from my family to take care of his half of the rent so paying the rent going forward isn't going to be an issue, but I'm scared of getting evicted myself for his legal issues even though I have no involvement, or them deciding that even with my family's emergency funds, that they'll cancel or refuse to let me renew my lease due to not having a second roommate with a second source of income. Does anybody have any advice about how I should go about dealing with this situation, what my rights are as a tenant, and how I should go about discussing this issue with my landlord? Any advice at all would be super helpful, thank you.
