I started working my job in March. From the get go, I informed them of my circumstances. I have health issues and some mental problems. I'm disabled, I informed them sometimes I might not be able to attend as normal. They said that was fine, but that was a bold face lie. From the start of working there, I wasn't given the hours I was promised. I got more hours than I scheduled for, but not for a good reason. You see, I was hired on to do stocking and retail for the store I was working for. It's a pretty decently sized private business. So these tasks weren't some small feat. Within my first week, I was already responsible for doing the entire order by myself. Which consisted of all of our alcohol and beverages. These weren't small orders. I was doing 60-70 boxes on a small day. On bigger days, around 100. Now that sounds fine. Do the order, get my shift done, go home. Wrong. They had me do all of the backstock for both our beer cooler and beverage cooler. As well as the outside trash (a lot of it), splitting firewood and cleaning the store. As well as stocking the entire main floor. I also did cashier shifts. And in 6 hours I would be ringing out nearly $10k and $2k In cash alone. One day a few weeks into working, I experienced one of my fits of gerd. Started throwing up stomach acid and got a migraine. I had already finished the orders for the day, and started on the backstock. I told my coworker I needed to go home. They told me not to, but eventually I had to. Didn't figure it would be a big deal. After all, I hadn't missed any work yet. And the time was already past my shifts end. I came in for my next shift and my boss takes me into the back office. And as a TL;DR in no uncertain terms told me if I didn't stay past my shift and finish everything, I'd be fired. I obviously wasn't happy about it but I gritted my teeth and moved forward. At this point, I was pretty much the only one that did our orders throughout the week. Usually only one day someone else would do an order on my off days. Fast forward a few months, I got my first raise. I put up with the bullshit. And got nothing but high praises for my work (keep this in mind for later). At about this point though stuff started to change. They began to change my schedule around constantly. Not only that by my hours were cut constantly. Sometimes only getting 12-15 hours a week (on paper hours of course, not the hours I was forced to stay over). The responsibilities they put on me became beyond what my managers did a lot of the time. Pricing and dates, paperwork, inventory, whatever they wanted to offload onto me. Now I kept up with it. Continued with whatever cartoony bullshit they threw at me. My employer and managers started to get more disrespectful of me. And at every turn I was nothing but cordial and respectful. And did my job as I was asked. I had gotten really sick, and had to call off on one of my register shift days. One day in multiple months. Next time I came into work, I got another office talk with my boss. And he said that if I called off another day like that without notice (dunno how I give notice for throwing up at 3am the night before) that I would be fired. I was pissed, but again, went along with it. My breaking point came recently though. I woke up late, came into work they said it wasn't an issue and I got to work. I was scheduled from 9-2. I got there at 11:30 and worked until 4:30. I got the orders done and the backstock. I walked into my managers office like I usually do to tell him I'm heading out. Now he asked me a bunch of questions did you get this done or that done blah blah blah and being tired, overworked and still needing to run some important errands after work that I had limited time to do before they close I said to him calmly 'listen man, I got some shit to do. I need to roll out of here.' My first time ever saying a swear word in front of them. And as context for this next part I am 21. My manager starts reaming me. About how im so disrespectful, and that I need to respect my elders and that I half ass my job blah blah. I simply apologized to him and said I didn't mean any disrespect by it. And he kept going. In my head at this point, I'm just remembering all of the last minute shifts they forced me to take, the disrespectful comments, the threat of being fired over things that aren't in my scope of control. And on top of it now I'm a grown ass man getting lectured at like he's my father. The fact I was doing significant amounts of extra labor for bad wages. I simply looked him in the eye and just said 'consider this my resignation' and walked out. No regrets in mind. Fast forward about a week to today, I get a call from my boss telling me I need to sign a paper for my resignation and to pick up my last check. I go in to get it. And while I'm waiting for him to give me the paper to sign so I can get out of there he asks me 'so what happened the other day why were you yelling at (managers name).' I gave him a confused look. I told him what happened in detail. I said I didn't yell at him, explained the interaction and what I said. Once again, I was cordial even though I was pissed off. I even acknowledged and apologized for my verbage and said it wasn't right (even though I got swore at constantly). I then get a lecture about how I'm unprofessional, and this isn't okay. And he said that he would've rather had me call off than come in late and do a half assed job. And said that all of my work was half assed. And that no employer will want me. I gritted my teeth, signed the paper, grabbed my check and left. After months of being the main pack mule getting everything off loaded on too, getting nothing but praise for how good my work was and how reliable I am. I got that speech. I feel no guilt. I will not tolerate that kind of disrespect for myself. Let this be a lesson that sometimes its better to leave than take the blows. Lemme know if I'm in the wrong. But I feel pretty justified in what I did.
