I'll keep this as brief as possible, but theres a lot of backfround. location: Tennessee. A couple of years ago I found out my aunt was living in her house with no electricity, or running water, and the place was literally collapsing around her. I live about a thousand miles away so there's little I can do besides making phone calls. I would get her hotel rooms when I could afford it, but she spent some time living on her carport. She isn't broke, she gets social security, and has a couple of small retirement accounts in the neighborhood of $50,000. so she has money in the bank, but she just isn't able to handle her affairs. Most of the time I can't even get ahold of her because she forgets to pay her cellphone bill. With the help of her cousin, we finally managed to get her into an apartment in a lightly assisted living facility about a year ago, under a program for low income people on social security, and things seemed to be getting better. Last week I get a call form her cousin that my aunt was taken to the ER because she was distraught that she couldn't find her parents. Her father has been dead nearly fifty years, and her mother nearly forty. Clearly her cognitive problems are worsening. She's been in the ER for days. A doctor ordered a cognitive evaluation, and a case worker was assigned. The information they will give us is very limited because there is no power of attorney or conservatorship established. My aunt is very stubborn, and refuses anything of the sort. The hospital did some sort of short written cognitive assessment and declared that she has "cognitive capacity". I was told it was a five minute test. I'm not being deliberately vague They just won't share much information, and she isn't a reliable source. Even worse, we found out she is currently in the eviction process from her apartment because she failed to produce required documents to renew her lease. From my understanding, all they needed was a statement from her retirement accounts, which she has not produced. I just want her to have a safe place to live, but she clearly can't handle her own affairs. The hospital says she has "capacity" whatever that means, and she has refused all talk of voluntary conservatorship. we are at a loss for how to help her at this point.
