TL;DR - Notion search is inferior and I don't think improving search is among the company's top priorities (cuz they now care only about Notion AI). I need search function to look broader and Obsidian offers this, so I migrated some of my notes to Obsidian. So I've been a Notion user since freshmen year, and I'm still using it daily to review concepts and formulas from my undergrad (I'm an engineering student). I did pretty well on linking my notes together, but I lot of time I need to rely on search because I know the keywords that I want to look for, but I don't remember the context surrounding it and where how many pages contain that keywords. I don't have to explain much about Notion search. It's not extensive enough. Here are the most obvious differences between Notion and Obsidian: 1. Notion only shows very brief context, 1-2 sentences surrounding the keyword, whereas in Obsidian, it shows every location in each page where the keyword is located. What I find interesting is that those irrelevant search results in Obsidian often lead me to pieces of information I didn't realize I need. 2. Notion search disappears after you click on one of the results, so when you look for something in a page and can't find it, you have to press the shortcut every time you want to move on to the next. In a very long page, you have to click on the result, then Ctrl+F to search within page. If it isn't there, Ctrl+K again. This is slow. In Obsidian, just scroll down and skim through every line. You'll get to where you want faster. 3. You can bookmark search result so that next time you don't have to think which keywords did I use last time. Here are some of Obsidian's features that made me start using it: 1. First thing first, migrating notes from Notion is easy. It requires only a few clicks. 2. Split tab 3. In-app browser -- open a link to a website and it opens the site in Obsidian, full screen 4. Files are stored locally -> load faster 5. Link to headings (in the same note, in other notes), subheadings, and a block. -- I can do this on Notion, but it requires more steps and Notion doesn't display its source. 6. Sandbox Vault -- an experimental vault where you can play around with Obsidian features without affecting your real vault. This makes Obsidian beginner-friendly. 7. Much better search! -- my number one reason for switching 8. There's a plug-in that randomly opens your note -- If you click on the plug-in icon, it'll keep open random pages. Good for checking incomplete notes. And here are the reasons why I'm still using Notion: 1. Database 2. Education Plus plan 3. Multi-device support (for free) -- Have to pay to get sync on Obsidian 4. Publish -- I publish my portfolio on Notion (for free). Have to pay on Obsidian So that's it. I stopped arguing with myself which platform should I use. It seems like there will never be a one-size-fit-all solution. I can accept that Notion loads slower because it's cloud-based, but I've been waiting for a new search function for a long time, too long, that I decided that I have to move some notes to Obsidian. Notion is not for making a network of knowledge, Obsidian is. I still keep my databases on Notion because I think Notion does it well. I also keep published pages on Notion because they can show comments.
