Overall, business is going well a few months in. Out of the original 4 people hired, one has endured. The others didn’t want to deal with working at a startup. Context: business is a bar/retail place. Have had lots of changes and improvements. But there’s one employee who I think I need to let go but I can’t quite seem to do it. They’re young but advertised their customer skills as being more than they are. They can make great drinks, so at least there is that. Their resume and the way they interviewed made me feel confident in a higher pay for this employee, but they aren’t really proving to be worth it. A big part of being successful at this job is connecting with customers, which this employee won’t do unless guided/prompted. They also aren’t great about completing tasks unless they have a list to do so or are asked. I’ve caught them on several shifts being aimless on their computer until I walk in and then they’re suddenly busy with something I asked them to do earlier. And they’re messy. There is a running joke amongst the staff that they can tell when this person worked because behind the bar is sticky, messy, etc. And due to their transportation circumstances, they’re usually on average 30 minutes late every shift, which we’ve addressed already. I’m conflicted. There are other one-off incidents that I could list. Definitely seems like cons outweigh pros. But I’m waffling because they’re not a Bad employee per se and I’m hoping to train them to be better. But it’s been 3 months…. I’d expect they’d be much better by now. What I’m asking from the group: give me your advice from prior experiences please. My first time really navigating a circumstance like this. Thanks!
