Location: Pennsylvania I’ve been working at a salon for almost two years now & there’s just some things that feel unclear if it’s legal to do or not, for example, we are mandated to stay at the salon & come in even if we have no clients booked, we are W-2 workers & are commission based so can they legally make us stay an entire day if we have no business & are making no money? They also will make us come in for unpaid classes on Sundays when we’re supposed to be closed & off & say it’s mandatory, to the point even if you’re sick & unable to attend the class we must bring a doctors note. They will make us make up hours missed whether we are sick or take a personal day even if no clients were booked on the day we requested off or called out, I also even got written up for calling out bc i hadn’t picked a day to make up the hours when i was in the hospital & even brought a note to them when i was back. Taking personal days in general is extremely difficult as it needs to be requested in at least 4 weeks in advance & we have to explain why we need off as well as make up that same week even if no clients were booked in the first palce. Is any of this okay? Clearly i understand it may be unfair but some coworkers have been questioning if it’s legal in the first place. also: we are paid at 40% commission with an additional 10% charge for backbar, is this normal?
