From my experience: When corporate in the US decided to send employee appreciation “gifts” to employees in Europe, it usually ended up in a huge bureaucratic mess because gifts received from employers are taxable in some countries. In the end, employees received a useless gift they didn’t want - and additional tax was deducted from their next paycheck. Leading to many angry employees asking to return the gift, so their paycheck wouldn’t take a hit without their consent. In the end, it would have been much easier (and also much cheaper and much more effective!) to just pay out a cash bonus using the existing payroll infrastructure…
